The Patriot Act

* The USA Patriot Act, enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks, stirs raw emotions in the debate over civil liberties vs. national security. Both Bush and Kerry support the law, but the Democratic senator urges changes and says Attorney General Ashcroft abuses the measure.

I can see some benefits to the Patriot Act, but I am wary of anything that can be used to curtail the rights and lessen the privacy of citizens. Any agency that can browse my secrets at a whim really should be supervised in some way by the public.

As patriots it is our duty to keep tabs on what the government is doing, and make sure that it is appropriate. Not the other way around.
